Native American Music

Click on the video below to hear "The Cherokee Morning Song."

The music of the Native Americans reveals a way of life that is:
  • purposeful - Nothing was wasted.  We could learn much about conserving our resources from them.  Even the sounds in their music are savored.
  • meditative - Their music reflects an inner quietness and connection with nature.
  • serious - There is an intensity in their music that mirrors their hard way of life.  I hear little humor and the tonalities are often haunting.
Combining musical instruments of today with the early instruments used by the Native Americans has produced a rich blend of sound.

Since this is Disablity Awareness Month, I wanted to share some incredible videos of musicians who have overcome their limitations.  Listen to Evelyn Glennie, world famous percussionist.

Shelby Murray doesn't let blindness keep her from pouring her heart into her piano playing.
